Aristotle lists three reasons why people have friends. They can be seen as three types of friend, some friends cover more then one of these. They are as follows:
1.) good. (inherent goodness)
2.) pleasure.
3.) usefulness.
Friends that are good cover the other catagories as they will be useful and will bring pleasure. So, good means inherently good. It is not always the case that a friend who brings you pleasure is one which is useful. An example of this would be a comic that might by funny but not useful. The same goes for a friend that is useful, they might not always bring you pleasure. Some co-workers or employees are hard working people and they are good to work with, but you might not find their company all that great out side of work, and this might be why.
The idea is to be good not because it is rewarding but just because, and it is rewarding. All people are looking for goodness.
